Hugo House: Making Meaning From Memory
Memories aren’t enough to make a memoir. To make a great story, we have to connect our memories to culture, to history, to zeitgeist—and then be as clear and specific about our unique perspectives as possible. In this generative workshop, we’ll open a number of creative doorways (and windows and portholes and tunnels) into meaning and discuss how and why they work. Participants will leave with at least twelve new prompts for mining memory and life stories for deeper meaning.

Real Life Humor Writing Workshop
This is a new class for me, developed with The Ongoing (my twice-monthly group you can learn about here). How will this help your writing? Humor is another way to connect with an audience. It doesn't have to be the primary way, and it's good to learn how to use levity - to bring some lightness to difficult topics, or elicit a smile of recognition. This isn't about slapstick, or being fall-down-laughing funny. It's more about how humor works, how to include it intentionally, using well-established tropes and forms, without being a comedian.

Memoir: The Process
I used to teach workshops regularly at Volcano Art Center back in the aughts, and I'm thrilled to make this offering now. Memories aren’t enough. We have to connect them to culture, to history, to zeitgeist—and then be as clear and specific about our unique perspectives as possible. In this generative workshop, we’ll open a number of creative doorways (and windows and portholes and tunnels) into meaning, and we’ll discuss how and why they work. We’re going to work on releasing the story without it getting caught in the mind first. Participants will leave with at least twelve new ways to mine memory and life stories for deeper meaning and story structure.
